*Depression is the leading cause of disability in the United States affecting people from all age groups. Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), Anxiety Disorder, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are often treated with first-line approaches such as antidepressants and psychotherapy. Unfortunately, these treatments don’t work for everyone.

What is TMS Therapy?

TMS is an FDA approved, non-invasive, safe and effective treatment for people suffering from drug- or treatment-resistant depression. *American Psychiatric Association and World Psychiatric Association recommend TMS as a second-line treatment for depression.
The full course of TMS treatment includes 5 sessions per week for up to 6 weeks. Duration of a single session is between 19 and 37 minutes.
TMS therapy provides long-term results for people suffering from depression. *Positive results from trans-cranial magnetic stimulation last for an average of approximately one year after treatment. Some patients need maintenance treatments, usually only once per year.
*As per studies conducted in the US Market, 50% to 60% of people suffering from depression, who haven’t received benefit from medications, experience a positive response with TMS therapy. About one-third of these individuals experience a full remission.

How does TMS Therapy Work?

NeuroStar® TMS therapy directs recurring magnetic energy pulses at the specific areas of the brain that we know are involved in depression. These magnetic pulses pass through the skull and stimulate brain cells thus improving communication between different parts of the brain. TMS doesn’t require anesthesia and it is well tolerated by human body as compared to the side effects associated with medications and ECT.

*TMS has been approved in the U.S. for just over 10 years. In this duration, there have been no lasting side-effects associated with the treatment. The most common side effects from TMS depression therapy is slight discomfort at the treatment spot, which vanishes after the first week of treatment.

*Medical trial results prove that the treatment is safe. In 10,000 treatments, patients have not experienced:

  • Nausea
  • Sedation
  • Loss of concentration or memory
  • Seizure
  • Sexual dysfunction problem
  • Sudden weight gain

TMS is not suitable for those with epilepsy or a family history of seizures. TMS therapy involves magnetic energy and patients with aneurism clips, stents, deep brain stimulators, metallic ear/eye implants, shrapnel or bullet fragments and pacemakers cannot undergo this treatment.
